Evaluating Burnout on Your Team

Posted

Your employees keep your organization running. The talent you employ allows you to innovate, meet clients’ demands and forge ahead in the marketplace. But what happens when the demands of your business fall on the shoulders of too few? This can lead to overworked employees who begin to buckle under the stress of long to-do lists and work hours—and ultimately job burnout. If you recognize the signs of burnout in your staff, it’s important to take quick action to prevent decreased output and productivity, or even turnover. Here’s what you need to know.

Three key signs an employee is burned out

If a former superstar staff member is showing signs that they have had enough, bells should go off that you need to make some changes and fast. Look for any of the following:

  1. Apathy and disengagement. When your staff are showing uncharacteristic signs that they’re unplugged and just don’t seem to care, it can be a sign that they’re simply overworked.
  2. Frequent complaining. Butting heads with your workers due to bad attitudes and complaints can occur when they’ve had too much to do for far too long. Everyone gets tired at some point and when it happens, you need to make some changes.
  3. Diminished performance. If a worker who was previously a creative star performer is making frequent mistakes, calling off sick more than normal, showing up late or leaving early, it can be a sign that they have been pushed too far on the job.

How to relieve the signs of burnout

If your staff need some TLC, there’s no time like the present to make a change. It’s important to focus on work-life balance. Employees have lives outside the office and need to relax and spend with their family and friends. If you can avoid overtime and weekend catch-up shifts, your staff will thank you. But sometimes you may simply need more workers to get the job done. If you need to staff up during busy seasons or cover employee leaves of absence, it can help to bring on temporary workers. This will help relieve your permanent full-time staff of additional duties they may have tacked on to pick up the slack.
